Spring Clean Up

April 21, 2012 Come join the fun from 9-11:30 a.m. at Highland Park as we clean up trash and paint the bridge. If our crowd of volunteers exceeds the work, we'll tackle the trash along Fearing viaduct, too. Bring gloves, wear old clothes, and we'll try to spruce things up.

Garden volunteers- thank you! Someone pulled last year's plants from the ground and put in spring bulbs. What a lovely surprise!

Update on the pool- Deputy Mayor Steve Herwat and Forestry and Recreation Commissioner Dennis Garvin toured some city pools last week and agreed that they all, and definitely Highland Park's pool, needed to be demolished soon. We'll keep you posted if we hear when this may get done.

Spring news

2012 Meeting dates:
March 27 - Forestry Department Commissioner Dennis Garvin will join us to answer questions about Highland Park pool's fate, and we'll plan the April park clean-up. Also, we'll discuss community gardens. Think about how to grow plants without using water from faucets.

April 24- Discussion of Highland Park skate park and painting a mural there.

May 22- Dirty Dozen report

If you are interested in improving recreational and natural facilities at Highland Park or Woodsdale Park, or have a neighborhood concern not covered by Burroughs Neighborhood Organization or Arlington Neighborhood Association, please attend our meetings. Like all community organizations, our members come and go, and we always welcome the ideas and energy of new people. Our boundaries are roughly Airport, Byrne, Glendale, and the Anthony Wayne Trail.

Meeting Date Change

Highland Heights Neighborhood Association meetings have changed from the third Tuesday to the fourth Tuesday of the month. Upcoming meetings will be Sept. 27, Oct. 25, and Nov. 22, 2011.

Wow!

I was just away for 24 days, but my how the garden has grown! Many thanks to all who have helped.

The Triangle Garden in July

What a big difference one can see since we started this year. Our volunteers, most of whom live close to the garden, have kept the garden from scorching in our hot, dry weather, and the mulch will help, too. Thank you to all who have contributed time, water, and effort.

Triangle Garden

This year, we've added perennials to the garden and a lovely butterfly bush, donated by master gardener, Christine. In the two photos of the garden, you can see how it has progressed. The city can't mow as often, so if the garden is going to be visible from the street, we'll need some volunteers to mow. We're also planting tall flowers. Carol Scheiber and Sarah Abts, pictured here, and Linda Scheiber and Linda Pomeroy have planted the gardens this year.

Thanks to our other consulting master gardener, Michelle, and to the many people who have and will be watering and weeding this summer. The master gardeners gave us a plan which we don't have the means to fully realize yet, but we've made a start and will be moving plants as we see how they do.

Park Clean-up

On April 16, two groups of volunteers joined five HHNA members to pick up trash and spread mulch on the playground and around small trees. Randy Nissen led his class from Toledo Early College H.S. in a search for trash with Sarah Abts. Don Mullen and Linda Pomeroy worked alongside more of Randy's class on the playground to spread a thick layer of mulch, and Cooper and Jackie Suter/Barchick directed a troop of Girl Scouts from Gesu in mulching young and newly planted trees in the park. Fortunately, the weather cooperated and we did not get rained on much, nor blown away.
